Navigation Who Qualifies for Healthcare through the VA?
Known as the Comprehensive Medical Benefits Package, Veterans who have active military service and who separated under any condition other than dishonorable may be able to receive preventive and primary care, including a full range of outpatient and inpatient services, through the VA. Enrolling is as simple as submitting a VA Form 10-10EZ along with supporting documentation. While Veterans whose service-connected disabilities are rated at 50 percent or more, are seeking treatment for a disability the military determined was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty within 12 months of active service, or seeking care for a service-connected disability are not required to enroll, it is recommended.
Veterans are not required to pay a monthly fee or deductibles though some Veterans may have to pay a small copay for some types of care, tests, or medications, for conditions not related to their military service. However, Veterans whose service-connected disabilities are rated at 50 percent or higher or are a former POW receive treatment for free. For Veteran’s without a service-connected condition and who do not fall into one of the above categories, he or she may still be eligible for free medical care depending on their income or be able to take advantage of one of the VA programs that assist Veterans who are unable to afford copays.
