Vision Resources for Low Income and the Disabled
Continuing in our series on resources for affordable or low-cost medical care in the area, I would like to highlight several resources for Vision care and treatments.
One resource is CSVR-Community Services for Vision Rehabilitation. They have an office in Mobile, Daphne and Foley. CSVR is a non-profit helping those whose vision cannot be corrected with usual eye care, surgery or glasses. They see people with low vision or blindness regardless of economic status. After an initial assessment, you are referred for therapy or recommended for aids or devices which may be available. They also work with many resources and other agencies to get you the care you need. To contact their offices please call 251-476-4744 in Mobile, 251-928-2888 in Daphne or 251-721-1160 in Foley.
The Lions Club provides eyeglasses and exams for indigent persons, but you must be referred by an agency such as Catholic Social Services, Salvation Army, Mobile Association for the Blind, AltaPointe, Waterfront Rescue Mission, etc. To contact the Mobile Association for the Blind please call 251-473-3585. The Lions Club can also refer those in need of issues relating to cataracts to the AL Lions’ Sight Conservation Association. This organization helps low income adults with vision-related problems including cataracts but you must be referred from The Lions Club.
