Veterans who are exposed to aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), also known as firefighting foam, face significant health challenges linked to the toxic chemicals in this foam, particularly PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). In addition to battling these illnesses, Veterans are also grappling with the complexities of securing benefits for conditions related to this exposure. Firefighting foam containing PFAS has been linked to a growing list of medical condition; however, the VA has been slow to acknowledge this even in the face of increasing medical evidence. While getting compensation for one of these medical conditions is difficult, it is not impossible.

The health problems associated with firefighting foam are primarily due to the hazardous chemicals present in the foam. Among the most frequently reported conditions are various cancers, such as kidney, testicular, and prostate cancer all of which have been found to occur more commonly in those exposed to PFAS. Thyroid disorders, including both functional disruptions and thyroid diseases, have also been connected to PFAS exposure. Reproductive issues are another significant concern with PFAS exposure linked to reduced fertility and complications like pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia. Indications of liver damage, such as increased liver enzymes, have been noted among exposed individuals. Elevated cholesterol levels, specifically total and LDL cholesterol, are another health effect attributed to certain PFAS. Further, there’s an observed association between PFAS exposure and ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Changes in immune response, including diminished vaccine efficacy and greater infection susceptibility, have also been reported. Veterans who have had contact with these chemicals and are experiencing health concerns are strongly advised to seek medical advice and discuss their exposure history with healthcare professionals. This step is not only vital for their health management but also essential in navigating the complexities of claiming related benefits.
