VA Confidence in New Electronic Health Records System ‘Shaken’ After Reports of Patient Harm
The VA, Congress, and the creators of the VA’s new electronic health records program (EHR) are renewing their review of the EHR rollout. Secretary McDonough said the department’s confidence has been shaken following system outages and Inspector General (IG) reports that document risks to patient care. Secretary McDonough has confirmed he is aware of the instances of patient harm and is working with vendors and the VA to correct the issues within the new system. There have been 148 cases of patient harm discovered at the VA Medical Center in Spokane, Washington alone. Secretary McDonough advised the rollout will continue as planned at additional VA facilities and the VA will continue to monitor the rollout closely while also trying to produce solutions to the current and ongoing issues.
