Navigation Social Security Highlights Important Information for Women during Women’s History Month
The month of March is celebrated as Women’s History Month which highlights the contributions of women to events in history and society. As part of Women’s History Month, Social Security emphasized their online booklet entitled “Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know.” The booklet can be found here. The booklet was created so as to help women know and understand the benefits to which they may be entitled as well as other Social Security programs including benefits for children. Those benefits include drawing from their own earnings record, spousal benefits, widow’s benefits, and benefits to be received as the parent of a child of a deceased worker.
According to Social Security, nearly 55 percent of people receiving Social Security benefits are women. Social Security stated more women work, pay Social Security taxes, and earn credit toward monthly retirement income than at any other time in history. Social Security also emphasized retirement planning as being essential for women as women’s life expectancies are longer than men on average. Moreover, Social Security encouraged women to create their personal My Social Security account so that they can view their full earnings history as well as see any future benefits to which they may be entitled.
