The chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committed is planning on bringing the Sen. Elizabeth Dole Act to the floor. This Act would increase funding for the VA for noninstitutional alternatives to nursing home care.

This is bipartisan legislation intended to address the needs of family members serving as full-time caretakers. It proposes to provide caretakers with mental health care services, respite care, home health aid and other assistance.

Currently, expenditures for at-home care cannot exceed 65% of what the cost would be if the veteran lived in a nursing home, however, under this Act, the amount would increase to 100%. It would also provide elderly and disabled veterans, or their designated family caregiver, with a small monthly budge to pay for help with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing and meal preparation, so they can continue to live at home.
