Celebrating Our Veterans: Veterans Day 2025
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. It was placed on November 11 because the armistice to end the war was signed on the 11 day of the 11 month at 11 A.M. However, in 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all those who serve.
I have been very privileged this year to participate in the planning and events leading up to Veterans Day 2025. This year, the Mobile Bay Area Veterans commission has many events planned for the Veterans in our area. The day will start with a flag raising ceremony the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park at 7 am. At 10 AM, in downtown Mobile, Alabama, our Veteran parade will start. Each year, the parade brings scores of organizations to participate by assembling floats and includes marching units, bands, flag details, and military equipment for participation in the Veterans Day Parade.
At noon, the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Commission invites everyone to join us in the annual Veterans Day Honors Luncheon to honor the Patriot of the Year and the Veteran of the Year at Fort Whiting. At 3 pm, the Parage of Flags Celebration will be at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion. The event features music, the Veterans Day Essay Contest winners’ presentations, a keynote address by the 2024-2025 Distinguished Young Woman of the Year, and more. The Parade of Flags features 4th-grade students from Mobile and Baldwin counties. At 7 pm, the day ends with a Patriotic Concert at the Alabama Battleship Memorial Park Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion by the Mobile Pops.
