Social Security programs are of vital importance to many Americans. In fact the number of people receiving benefits is in the millions. The Social Security Administration has released data showing that approximately 72.9 million people receive benefits from programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2024.

Six million people were newly awarded Social Security benefits in 2024. Of those, the average age of a disabled worker receiving benefits was 56 years of age in 2024. Fifty-five percent of adult Social Security beneficiaries in 2024 were women.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program for Americans to receive benefits as a child or as an adult if you have not worked enough and are determined to be disabled. SSI is also paid to seniors who are not disabled, but meet the welfare requirements. Of those on SSI benefits, 84% of those were receiving payments because of a disability or blindness in 2024.
