Nationwide Social Security offices began a new process of opening for appointment only recently. This change has now made it to the local field offices in Alabama and Mississippi. Beginning December 2, 2024, an appointment is required for most services.

For services such as a new or replacement Social Security card, you can go to SSA.gov. You can also conduct other business online at your SSA.gov account.

Social Securities notice states that if you need help that day or are unable to schedule an appointment, you should call 866-593-1922 or 800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment. However, a notice from the Associate Commissioner, Dawn Bystry, states that “they want to make clear that we will not turn people away for service who are unable to make an appointment or do not want to make an appointment. For example, members of vulnerable populations, military personnel, people with terminal illnesses, and individuals with other situations requiring immediate or specialized attention may still walk in for service at our field offices.”
